ECOPAL 2.0 Corrugated Pipe

Over the past years, Ruzzo Reti SPA, manager of the integrated water service in 39 of the 40 municipalities that are part of the Teramo Territorial Body, has been committed to the important objective of rationalising the wastewater purification system of the main river course ‘Tordino’, which runs along the route that connects the cities of Teramo and Giulianova. The project involves the construction of sewerage distribution networks and lifting stations necessary to decommission 6 existing wastewater purification systems along the above-mentioned river course.

Work started at the beginning of 2022 on the section called Mosciano Stazione-Depuratore Villa Pozzoni, which is the terminal sewage feeding network to the Giulianova-Colleranesco wastewater purification system.

The approximately 6-kilometre sewer manifold, located between the municipalities of Mosciano Sant’Angelo and Giulianova (TE), is made with DN/DE 800 mm polyethylene gravity pipes alternating with three pressurised sections of 580 ml, 130 ml and 1480 ml each, made with two DN/DE 315 mm PN 16 polyethylene pipes. The laying of DN/DE 250 mm gravity pipes is also applied for a section of approximately 200 ml.

Out of all the solutions available on the market, the managing body’s choice fell on the second-generation ECOPAL 2.0 corrugated polyethylene pipe. The project includes the use of a class SN8 ECOPAL 2.0 corrugated pipe with an inner diameter of 683 mm and an outer diameter of 800 mm.

Each bar has an approximate weight of 180 kg, which allows for safe and quick handling and installation. By means of ropes connected to the boom of a crane, the pipe is lifted, handled and positioned on the excavation bottom, where a suitable sand bedding has previously been created. The excavation made in a narrow trench at a depth of about 3 metres is secured by means of trenchers. A sliding substance is then placed on the lip of the two gaskets, which were previously mounted on the male part of the pipe, and on the inside wall of the pipe socket before proceeding to join two subsequent bars, exerting an even thrust with the crane boom. Once the trenchers have been removed, the sand to be laid around and over the pipe is unloaded, and then the operation is completed by compacting the material using vibrocompactors. The contracting companies, despite the presence of several underground works interfering with excavation and laying, manage to lay an average of 60 m per day.
